The Netherlands are a country of contrasts, where history rubs shoulders with modernity and the countryside is in close proximity to the big cities. Today, after passing through some of the country’s most beautiful villages, we leave the countryside to suddenly enter the heart of Amsterdam, where we’ll spend the night. The magic of this city is seen in the gabled houses typical of the Golden Age, the canals that criss-cross the city, and the brown cafés that are several hundred years old.

Canals are one of Holland‘s richest landscapes, and they accompany us for most of the day on our way to Woerden. We take advantage of the afternoon to visit the Kasteel de Haar, one of the country’s largest and most luxurious castles.
Built in the 13th century, the castle was extended and rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a neo-Gothic style. It has impressive towers, a moat and magnificently landscaped park. This typical Dutch castle is one of the most famous in the Netherlands.

Today, our route winds its way through the polders of Southern Holland, a landscape unique in the world. Polders are “enclosed spaces, conquered from the water by dyking, then drained for agricultural purposes”.
We continue on to Gouda, the cheese capital of the Netherlands. This beautiful town offers a rich historic center surrounded by canals.
From here we ride on to Kinderdijk “the child’s dike”, one of the most emblematic sites in the Netherlands, where nineteen mills, built around 1740, stand neatly lined up on the edge of the canals. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, these mills are a symbol of water management in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands, the land of flowers. World leader in tulip production, floriculture has turned this small country into a great nation. In spring, mainly between late March and mid-May, Holland is covered in color.
After visiting the town of Leiden, where Rembrandt was born, we head north, where the first fields of flowers appear with their sweet fragrance. At the heart of these acres of tulips and hyacinths lies Keukenhof, the world’s largest bulb garden. After visiting this emblematic Holland location, we continue towards the North Sea coast, where flowers have suddenly given way to dunes. Further on, Haarlem, with its many historic buildings and magnificent old squares, is the final stop on this colorful day.
