France’s most secret and diversified region : The Massif Central. 

Get ready to explore the Massif Central. This region of France is one of the most underrated region not only in France but also in Europe. On your way to the south, you discover powerful volcanoes that once shaped the heart of France. In addition to their wild beauty you will ride through the greenlands and meadows of the Aubrac, many beautiful villages, the wonderful Gorges du Tarn, the Cevennes national park before reaching the Salagou Lake in Languedoc.

Day 1 : Welcome to Massif Central - Monts Dore

We will meet you at the Clermont-Ferrand train station at a predetermined time in the morning before transferring you to your lunch place facing the Puy de Dôme. After introducing you to the program and adjusting your bike we ride through the Volcanoes of Auvergne Park, made of green plateaux and pastoral forests. On the way to Besse-et-Saint-Anastasie. we explore the Monts Dore and Sancy.

Route: 65 km / 1100 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: Mildiss Hotel 4* – Besse et Saint-Anastaise

The route leaves the Sancy massif to the south and the Cézallier, desert-like mountain plateau. Then the Puy Mary volcano is approached via the Pas de Peyrol. A magnificent descent along a line of ridges leads us to Salers, a pretty village perched on a hill and surrounded by rolling fields where the famous long-horned cows graze. With its small center made up of 16th century stone buildings and its panoramas of the Puy Mary, the place invites you to stroll.

Overlooked by the Plomb du Cantal, you will ride several valleys with different landscapes commonly used by the Tour de France. The town of Saint-Flour, from the top of its rocky promontory of volcanic origin, owns a rich and eventful history.

More than 130 years after its construction by Gustave Eiffel, the Garabit viaduct is admired by all. At its feet, the Truyère river has dug its bed in a sumptuous and multifaceted valley that we follow to Chaudes-Aigues, a spa resort where no less than 32 hot springs gush forth, including the Par spring, naturally the hottest in Europe (82°C).

We enter the Aubrac plateau, a rural region of medium mountains with a very well preserved heritage.

Later on the route offers us a wonderful view of the gigantic Gorges du Tarn, more than 600m deep. 25 km of meanders, gorges, cirques, faults or dolomitic arches await us, revealing the power of nature that sculpted the landscape in the quaternary era. Difficult to enumerate all the treasures hidden there.

Accomodation: Chateau de la Caze – Gorges du Tarn

From the Gorges du Tarn, we access by picturesque and winding roads  a plateau which unfolds steppe landscapes of natural beauty.

The silhouette of Mount Aigoual, the mythical mountain of the Cévennes National Park, offers an extraordinary view embracing the Mediterranean Sea, 60 km away. We continue to go into the Cévennes until the we reach the vertiginous Cirque de Navacelles: a pure geological wonder !

We ride towards the hinterland of Montpellier, a well-known wine region. Then we quickly reach the Gorges de l’Hérault and the spectacular Salagou lake with its red-tinted landscapes.

It’s the end of this bike tour across the Massif Central with Veymont Travel. After breakfast your guide will take you to Montpellier train station/airport.
