Sierra nevada & DESERT BIKE TOUR

We will meet you at the Granada airport at a predetermined time before transferring you to your hotel in Granada. In the afternoon we will take the opportunity to introduce you to the program and adjust your bike. We take advantage of the end of the day to visit the old town of Granada and in particular the Albaicín quarter and its narrow streets, offering a unique view of the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada.

This morning we visit one of the most famous monuments in Spain: the Alhambra. The Alhambra is a fortified medieval palace inherited from the Moorish period, it overlooks the city and the plain of Granada. After this immersion in Spanish history, we return to the hotel to put on our cycling outfit and start this first stage towards Guadix and its “badlands”.

The town of Guadix is located at about 1000 m altitude at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, in the plain of Guadix (Hoya de Guadix). World famous for its troglodyte houses (Cuevas), the surrounding landscapes are arid and grandiose! Here, many movie scenes have been shot, especially for the famous Westerns of the 60s and 70s.
On the program of the day’s ride: desert, canyon and panoramic views, typical villages, olive groves and wide open spaces.

Leaving Guadix we gradually leave its unique landscapes to reach the foot of the Sierra Nevada. The road offers sometimes long straight lines typical of the region before rising in the middle of the pines towards the heart of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The fauna is active there and maybe you will have the chance to meet a daring fox as we did during our scouting..

The Tabernas Desert is officially considered as the only desert in Europe, and it is in this scenery that we will start the stage before getting higher to appreciate the beauty of the region: from the Mediterranean Sea to the Mulhacén (3482m), the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada and of continental Spain. Some of the sites in the Tabernas Desert have been and still are used as natural backdrops for major film productions. Spaghetti Westerns of course but also Lawrence of Arabia or Game of Thrones. Difficult to reach by road bike, we will have the possibility to stop there after the stage thanks to our van support!

Route: 40 km / 650 m Elevation Gain – Option 2 : 70 km / 2200 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: Hotel Catedral 4* – Almeria

The region of Almeria is ideally located and allows easy access to the desert inland and to the Mediterranean coast.
After a short transfer we start this maritime stage where we drive in the heart of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata and its semi-desert Mediterranean landscape. The road winds through the heart of the land, punctuated by white villages (pueblos blancos) while offering panoramic views of the jagged coast.

Route: 40 km / 550 m Elevation Gain – Option 2 : 70 km / 800 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: Hotel Catedral 4* – Almeria

For this last stage we start our ride near the desert of Tabernas before rising in the heart of the Sierra de los Filabres and its high villages. The winding road offers a view on the valley, the desert and the sea. We take advantage of this last Andalusian evening to celebrate this magnificent week.
